OUT THERE: CRIME OF THE PARANORMAL is a new Hulu docuseries. It’s very much a true crime production despite dealing with cases of the paranormal variety.

While each episode focuses on a paranormal case, it leads to very real crimes committed based on people’s beliefs or convictions. I love this approach. In fact, as soon as I saw the Duplass Brothers were producers, I expected something good, and this docuseries delivered.

A different yet obvious approach

Usually, we get either a deep dive into a paranormal case or a classic true crime case. With Out There: Crimes of the Paranormal, we’re getting both. And in a way that seems very obvious.

Far too often, we (myself very much included) joke about people wearing tinfoil hats and believing in conspiracy theories of increasingly creative varieties. However, these beliefs can lead to brutal and very physical actions.

That’s why the cases in Out There: Crimes of the Paranormal begin as stories about what someone believes in. Later, it ends up being about the crimes they commit.

Or, well, in some cases, the crimes they are accused of having committed.

There is plenty of room for gray areas in Out There: Crimes of the Paranormal. This isn’t meant to make fun of people for believing in things others may not. Instead, it’s about recognizing what this belief can make people do.

And not a word about religion though you could (obviously!) very easily replace any of these “paranormal” cases with religion.

In the case of UFOs, it’s not as much paranormal anymore. It’s an area being investigated and recognized as valid.

The eight episodes of Out There on Hulu

You should check out all eight episodes, and I think you will because episode 1 alone is so strong. Actually, so is the second episode, so there’s plenty to keep you hooked.

We’ve included the titles of the eight episodes below. Simply seeing the titles should give you an inkling of what the subject is. Well, the paranormal subject, not the true crime. That comes when you watch the episode!

The 8 episodes in Season 1:

• “Web of the Lizard People” is episode 1
• “Lights over Long Island” is episode 2
• “The Pope Lick Goatman” is episode 3 (okay, that title is tricky)
• “Jersey With Hunt” is episode 4
• “Interstellar Voyager” is episode 5
• “The Shape-shifting Defense” is episode 6
• “Smoky Mountain Nightmare” is episode 7
• And finally, “Ghosts of Chinatown” is episode 8

I’m sure you will find your favorite episode, but I’m quite impressed by several of them. Episode 1 left me both fascinated, intrigued, and quite angry. These feelings tended to continue in some form for all episodes.

The Truth is Out There

As Fox Mulder of The X-Files always focused on: The truth is out there! And that’s what this Hulu docuseries also focuses on. However, in these cases, the truth is that mental illness can come into play in ways that result in crimes.

Violent and often deadly crimes!

The eight true crime cases covered in Out There: Crimes of the Paranormal all include shocking encounters with the paranormal world and true crime. And we’re getting these stories through eyewitness accounts, expert interviews, and investigations.

In each case, someone believes that something inhuman and/or paranormal is going on. It leads them to pull away from the real world and create their own reality. All because they steadfastly believe that the truth is out there.

And they simply must get the rest of us to understand and believe as well. Again, you could easily replace these paranormal cases with religious beliefs and people wouldn’t question the people as much.

To me, that is perhaps the scariest thing!

Watch Out There: Crimes of the Paranormal on Hulu now!

This new docuseries comes from the creative team behind Hulu’s Sasquatch, which was also produced by Duplass Brothers Productions. For this new Hulu docuseries, Number 19 is also producing.

The executive producers are Mark Duplass, Mel Eslyn, Jay Duplass, Joshua Rofé, Steven Berger, Zach Cregger, and Alexandra Orton. Shuli Harel also serves as a co-executive producer, and M. Elizabeth Hughes serves as Producer.

I loved how all the seemingly paranormal and “out there” stories resulted in very human crimes. It just goes to show that you can never underestimate the power of mythology or the allure of the paranormal.

And what this docuseries definitely shows us is that there are monsters among us. They just tend to be of a very human variety.

Out There: Crimes of the Paranormal is on Hulu from September 24, 2024. All eight episodes are released on the premiere day.
