TALES FROM THE VOID is a new Screambox series. It’s a horror anthology and often the episodes also include elements of sci-fi or thriller. As it’s so often the case – and also why we cover these three genres along with true crime documentaries here on Heaven of Horror.

For this new Screambox anthology, the stories come from Reddit. Specifically, the “No Sleep” subreddit, and for each story told, we also get a quick interview with the writer after the feature element. I loved hearing from the often hidden contributor: The writer!

From Reddit’s NoSleep to Screambox

In the old days, CreepyPasta was the place to find creepy short stories, and now Reddit’s NoSleep community is one of the biggest forums for that niche. In fact, the author of the first episode story even mentions that he started out on CreepyPasta.com so the connection is obvious.

With the Tales from the Void anthology on Screambox, you’ll get a new Horror Anthology Series that feels like many of the others. Still, this one does manage to set itself apart by focusing on the authors and their ideas and reasons for writing the short story adapted.

Also, there is always room for more well-made horror content, which Tales from the Void certainly delivers. Not only is the production quality impressive, but the stories and acting also deliver on an impressive level.

Tales from the Void – Review | “Into the Unknown”

It all begins with “Into the Unknown”

Prior to the release of the first two episodes of Tales from the Void, we were given access to the first episode, which is what we’re basing this review on.

The first story is “Into the Unknown” and offers an extremely simple setup that works thanks to the character-driven story. A pitch-black square suddenly appears outside an apartment complex. It’s flat and doesn’t reflect light or do anything else.

It’s just there in all its eerie and ominous glory.

DETAILS ABOUT EPISODE 1 “INTO THE UNKNOWN”

When a mysterious black square appears in the middle of an apartment complex, suspicions develop between neighbors about the horrors it may bring. As mistrust grows, they slowly learn that the square isn’t the only thing to be afraid of.

The director is Joe Lynch and it’s based on the r/NoSleep story “The Black Square” by Matthew Dymerski. Tales from the Void stars Mpho Koaho, Martin Roach, Joey Freddy Larsen, and John Thomas Gauthier.

What the episode is mostly about is how people react. No one calls the authorities because they don’t trust them to know what to do. Also, there are people who are quick to appoint themselves as the leaders of the community and they put themselves in charge.

We know this dynamic from every single post-apocalyptic movie. Whether it’s zombies, aliens, or disease, someone is always ready to make themselves “boss” of everyone else.

What happens from this point on is something you should experience for yourself!

I write reviews and recaps on Heaven of Horror. And yes, it does happen that I find myself screaming, when watching a good horror movie. I love psychological horror, survival horror and kick-ass women. Also, I have a huge soft spot for a good horror-comedy. Oh yeah, and I absolutely HATE when animals are harmed in movies, so I will immediately think less of any movie, where animals are harmed for entertainment (even if the animals are just really good actors). Fortunately, horror doesn't use this nearly as much as comedy. And people assume horror lovers are the messed up ones. Go figure!
