EVIL AMONG US: THE GRIM SLEEPER is a new Tubi true crime documentary. The runtime is around 80 minutes (without commercials), so it doesn’t run for too long.

Also, like the previous installments of Evil Among Us on Tubi, it tells the story of the perpetrator. However, it doesn’t neglect at also remembering the victims. In fact, the one surviving victim (that we know of) is part of this documentary.

One of the most infamous serial killers

The serial killer known as “The Grim Sleeper” was also called the “Southside Slasher” and the “25 Auto Killer” while an active serial killer. And he almost got away with murder. Well, many murders.

The recipe for this was an understaffed and overworked LAPD who could not (and frankly would not!) prioritize these murders. Why? Because the victims were usually addicts working the streets to make money. Also, they were usually black.

Somehow, it seemed that these women were expendable. Or, at the very least, no one was hounding the homicide detective for news in the investigation.

Still, with the amount of murders he committed, he ended up as one of the most infamous serial killers in the US. For this reason alone, it makes sense that the latest Evil Among Us installment is about The Grim Sleeper.

Science strikes again!

As shown in this installment of Evil Among Us, the serial killer almost got away with it. Or rather, he did manage to get away with it for a long time.

The span of his crimes was from 1984 to 2007, and he was arrested in 2010 and sentenced in 2016. Ultimately, we’re talking 10-25 victims with 1 known survivor who was able to take part in the trial.

When Lonnie David Franklin Jr. was finally caught it was thanks to science. DNA from a new victim could be linked to many previous victims.

In that sense, the case of The Grim Sleeper isn’t unlike The Golden State Killer, who was also finally caught in 2018. This was when DNA could finally be matched to Joseph James DeAngelo.

The moniker “The Grim Sleeper” came from Lonnie David Franklin Jr. having supposedly been “on a break” from killing anyone from 1988 to 2002. Of course, most people recognize that the more likely scenario is that there are many more victims of this serial killer.

Plot

The Grim Sleeper, one of the nation’s most infamous serial killers, remained undetected for decades—until a shocking breakthrough changed everything.

I write reviews and recaps on Heaven of Horror. And yes, it does happen that I find myself screaming, when watching a good horror movie. I love psychological horror, survival horror and kick-ass women. Also, I have a huge soft spot for a good horror-comedy. Oh yeah, and I absolutely HATE when animals are harmed in movies, so I will immediately think less of any movie, where animals are harmed for entertainment (even if the animals are just really good actors). Fortunately, horror doesn't use this nearly as much as comedy. And people assume horror lovers are the messed up ones. Go figure!
