ADORATION is a new Netflix mystery series from Italy (org. title: Adorazione). The series has just six episodes, so it’s a quick watch. It’s loosely based on the novel of the same name written by Alice Urciuolo. While this is a young adult series about teenagers becoming adults, its story is universal.

The young actors all deliver strong and believable portrayals in this gorgeous production. It’s a crime mystery that revolves around a girl that goes missing. However, it will evolve into an actual crime mystery.

Children on the cusp of being young adults

The main plot of Adoration begins when a 16-year-old girl vanishes. Of course, a 16-year-old is hardly a young adult as you’re still a minor at this age. However, at 16 someone isn’t a child either. I mean, obviously, they’re a child legally, but it’s that coming-of-age period where you’re in between.

As covered in this Italian Netflix series, your maturity and desires (not just of the carnal variety) are often closely connected with your family situation. Some of these teens have strong and loving households while others are left to their own devices.

This isn’t necessarily a bad thing, but it does lead to them doing a lot of stuff that no adults are aware of. Drugs and alcohol are one aspect but relationships with those who are adults can be another (often more dangerous) element.

And no, that’s not a spoiler. More of an observation based on different plot elements.

The Netflix series Adoration ending

With just six episodes, I expect most viewers will reach the ending of Adoration quite fast. The story is engaging and the characters are intriguing, so there’s plenty to keep you coming back. Fortunately, you can also look forward to episode six and the Adoration series ending.

It wraps up all the elements of the storyline very neatly and doesn’t attempt to sugarcoat anything.

Over the course of six episodes, you’ll see lots of secrets come to light. Many will disrupt the small Italian community, but it never gets too far out.

We’re on the coast of Agro Pontino (south of Rome), and summer has just begun when Elena disappears. As usual, the initial assumption is that the teenager is merely a runaway.

Unfortunately, they are wrong and something much more sinister has happened. In an attempt to help solve the mystery, her friends and family try to recreate her last movements. Once the ending of the Adoration series comes in episode 6, you will see what happened, so definitive answers are given.

Watch Adoration on Netflix now!

Adoration (org. title: Adorazione) was written by Donatella Diamanti (The Sea Purple) with Giovanni Galassi & Tommaso Matano (Netflix series Curon). Based on the book by Alice Urciuolo and with the episodes directed by Stefano Mordini (The Catholic School).

As with any good mystery series, we need to get the pieces little by little and try to get an idea of what the full puzzle will say once completed. Each of Elena’s friends brings something to the table, but is it part of why she disappeared?! That’s what you need to watch the full series to find out.

Both the teen girls and boys will learn something from this experience, and the casting of these characters is spot-on. The girl who disappears, Elena, is portrayed by Alice Lupparelli, while Vanessa, her best friend and the main character, is played by Noemi Magagnini.

Both are magnificent! The same goes for Beatrice Puccilli as Vera, who is also quite rebellious. As already stated, everyone is great, but these three stood out for me. If you’re in the mood for a good mystery crime thriller with a coming-of-age story, then this is the one.

Also, if you’re a fan of the Italian HBO series My Brilliant Friend, which just ended after four seasons, this should help fill the void that series left.

Adoration is out on Netflix from November 20, 2024.

Plot

When a 16-year-old girl vanishes, secrets come to light and disrupt a small community as her friends and family try to re-create her last movements.

I write reviews and recaps on Heaven of Horror. And yes, it does happen that I find myself screaming, when watching a good horror movie. I love psychological horror, survival horror and kick-ass women. Also, I have a huge soft spot for a good horror-comedy. Oh yeah, and I absolutely HATE when animals are harmed in movies, so I will immediately think less of any movie, where animals are harmed for entertainment (even if the animals are just really good actors). Fortunately, horror doesn't use this nearly as much as comedy. And people assume horror lovers are the messed up ones. Go figure!
