GANYMEDE (2024) is a new LGBTQ+ thriller with a plot that has vibes of both demonic and gothic tales. A very different (and important) kind of cautionary tale. Read our full Ganymede movie review here!

GANYMEDE (2024) is a new gothic thriller with an LGBTQ+ storyline. We have gay characters alongside very homophobic characters. Also, religion and mythology come into play.

As does have an element of a haunting. Or revenge, you could even call it. The story is small and easy to follow, but so very important that I’m happy the focus wasn’t on making it any bigger.

A matter of life or death

The opening scene of Ganymede makes it obvious that the story is a matter of life or death. With simple identification markers of the Queer community in the 1980s, we know that the person in the opening scene is gay.

Following this, there’s a time jump to the present. Here, we meet a small-town wrestling star as he develops a crush on an openly gay classmate.

This is completely unacceptable in the small God-fearing (not very God-loving) town. We see people who try to understand and accept as well as those who only object to and hate anyone who is different.

Even if it hurts themselves as well as the LGBTQ+ people in their lives.

Ganymede (2024) – Review | Gothic LGBTQ+ Thriller

A creature from within

The kindhearted wrestler battles with his own sexuality to such a degree that it is tormenting him physically and emotionally. A grotesque creature is invading his thoughts as he tries to keep down his feelings.

His very legacy-obsessed family does nothing to help. And yes, as it is so often the case, the other members of the family aren’t as “good and pure” as they would have anyone believe.

They turn to the church for help and remedies to alleviate and cure their son’s homosexuality are used. It’s brutal but also something that happens in real life.

This LGBTQ+ thriller stars Jordan Doww (Reach), Pablo Castelblanco (Alaska Daily, Happy’s Place), David Koechner (Scouts Guide to the Zombie Apocalypse, Cheap Thrills), Robyn Lively (Teen Witch), Joe Chrest (Stranger Things), and Marissa Reyes (Raven’s Home).

This new campy Southern Gothic thriller comes from life and creative partners Colby Holt and Sam Probst. It was directed by Colby Holt and Sam Probst from a script by Colby Holt. The movie has been a Festival Favorite and it’s easy to understand why.

Ganymede made its world premiere at the 41st Reeling International Film Festival. There, it took home the Audience Award for Best Narrative Feature Film. At the Chattanooga Film Festival, the film won the Pride Award.

Now it’s being released on Cable and Digital VOD, including via Apple TV, Fandango at Home, and Prime Video.

Ganymede is an LGBTQ thriller with a story that many should be able to relate to. It’s a story of love and acceptance. Or rather, what it does to a person not to have this. I recommend everyone to check out this thriller.

Ganymede is out on VOD/Digital HD in the US & Canada on August 6, 2024.

Plot

When a small town wrestling star develops a crush on an openly gay classmate, he begins to be stalked by a grotesque creature that invades his thoughts, all the while struggling to live up to the standard set by his legacy-obsessed dad.

I write reviews and recaps on Heaven of Horror. And yes, it does happen that I find myself screaming, when watching a good horror movie. I love psychological horror, survival horror and kick-ass women. Also, I have a huge soft spot for a good horror-comedy. Oh yeah, and I absolutely HATE when animals are harmed in movies, so I will immediately think less of any movie, where animals are harmed for entertainment (even if the animals are just really good actors). Fortunately, horror doesn't use this nearly as much as comedy. And people assume horror lovers are the messed up ones. Go figure!
