GG PRECINCT is a new Netflix series from Taiwan (org. title: Zheng Gang Fen Ju). It’s a unique kind of genre mix that includes comedy, horror, crime, action, fantasy, mystery, and (of course!) drama.

We’re getting a little bit of everything, but it could also simply be called a dark thriller comedy. That wouldn’t completely cover it though, while mentioning all the many genres paints a better picture.

Also, the opening credits resemble something out of a James Bond movie. That just shows how much of a genre mix this is.

Continue reading our GG Precinct series review below. There are 6 episodes in the series. Find it on Netflix from August 22, 2024.

Crime, comedy, and murder

In GG Precinct on Netflix, we’re getting a unique genre-blending crime comedy series from Taiwan. The rookie police captain Lin Tzu-ching (Gingle Wang) works with the goofy detective Wu Ming-han (Hsu Kuang-han) to solve murders.

Unfortunately, they don’t seem to possess the talents needed to solve the mystery. The killer stages the murders as chilling Chinese-idiom word games. And they are not the best at solving the serial killer’s deadly puzzles, so it’s quite the uphill battle.

Also, the murders are very crazy and wacky. For example, one victim is covered in chicken feathers and wearing a reindeer antler hat. Yeah, this isn’t Se7en or Longlegs but rather a more comedic take on a very serious subject.

Fortunately, everyone working on this series (in front of the camera and behind) is clearly very aware of what they’re making. This makes it work even if it sounds very weird.

GG Precinct (2024) – Review | Netflix Genre-blending Series

An infamous Chinese idiom serial killer

The very bizarre crime scenes reveal that anyone who misuses an idiom could be the next target of this killer. However, in another strange twist, the infamous Chinese idiom serial killer has already been caught.

That happened more than two decades ago, which means a copycat must be at work now.

As the infamous serial killer, we see actor Tai Chih-yuan return to acting in a series. He decided to return to working on a series to star among young and talented actors. Also, you’ll see that he’s wearing a straitjacket and muzzle like Hannibal Lecter.

And really, who wouldn’t want to take on a role that pays tribute to that iconic (and very fictional) character?

Watch the GG Precinct series on Netflix now!

If you’re not sure if this is for you, then watch the trailer to get an idea of whether it is. Also, I can tell you that this builds on the box office hit Marry My Dead Body – Taiwan’s official selection for the 2024 Academy Awards.

If you watched (and enjoyed) that Taiwanese production, then you have a good idea of what to expect. And now, the cops of GG Precinct are returning for more wacky and very creative crime investigations.

As already mentioned, there are 6 episodes in the GG Precinct series from Taiwan (org. title: Zheng Gang Fen Ju). With just six episodes, it is a quick watch and if you enjoy the vibe, it’s a solid genre treat.

GG Precinct is out on Netflix on August 22, 2024.

I write reviews and recaps on Heaven of Horror. And yes, it does happen that I find myself screaming, when watching a good horror movie. I love psychological horror, survival horror and kick-ass women. Also, I have a huge soft spot for a good horror-comedy. Oh yeah, and I absolutely HATE when animals are harmed in movies, so I will immediately think less of any movie, where animals are harmed for entertainment (even if the animals are just really good actors). Fortunately, horror doesn't use this nearly as much as comedy. And people assume horror lovers are the messed up ones. Go figure!
