HORROR’S GREATEST is a new Shudder Original Series. With five episodes, it is chockful of interviews with some of the most amazing horror filmmakers and actors. For horror fans, this is a gorgeous treat that is sure to serve as inspiration.

I found myself reminded of movies I now desperately want to watch again. Also, I discovered a few movies that I have yet to watch, but now need to find ASAP. A truly wonderful docuseries that reminds us all why horror is still so popular.

The five first episodes

You’ll notice I say the five first episodes, which is simply my way of attempting to will more episodes. I am a huge fan of this Shudder Original documentary series as it covers Horror’s Greatest in the most delicious way.

The focus of the first five Horror’s Greatest episodes

  • “Tropes and Clichés” is episode 1
  • “Giant Monsters” is episode 2
  • “Japanese Horror” (or simply “J-Horror”) is episode 3
  • “Horror Comedies” (which I love) is the focus of episode 4
  • “Stephen King Adaptations” is the subject of episode 5

Basically, this Shudder docuseries is full of tribute and homage to this wonderful genre. In a time where so many want to talk badly about horror productions and say that nothing scares them anymore, I love that an entire docuseries focuses on the opposite.

This is an honest and true love of the genre in all its quirky and weird little corners. Sure, it may not all be for you. However, if you do watch all five episodes as they come out (and, trust me, you should), then you just might be surprised.

For example, I’m not a huge J-Horror fan, but I discovered a few titles, I’ll need to check out.

Is one of your horror favorites in the Shudder docuseries?

In the Shudder Original series Horror’s Greatest, we get treated to some wonderful interviews. Both with scholars, writers, directors, and actors. Often these people could easily choose more than one of those titles.

The docuseries features interviews with Kate Siegel (The Haunting of Hill House, Hush), David Dastmalchian (Late Night with the Devil), Joe Hill (The Black Phone), and Tom Holland (Fright Night, Child’s Play).

Also, Jenn Wexler (The Sacrifice Game), Dewayne Perkins (The Blackening), Gigi Saul Guerrero (Satanic Hispanics), Alex Winter (Destroy All Neighbors), Jordan Vogt-Roberts (Kong: Skull Island), and many more.

Horror’s Greatest comes from showrunner/executive producer Kurt Sayenga. Joseph Freed and Allison Berkley are executive producers for Marwar Junction Productions. They also produced the Shudder hit series The 101 Scariest Horror Movie Moments of All Time.

With five episodes, we’re getting a solid deep dive into a few of the most familiar niches and horror elements. Fortunately, this also leaves room for plenty more episodes.

I could easily see one focusing on Spanish-language horror movies or Nordic Noir. Even the classic slasher or serial killer stories could have their own episodes. And, very obviously, both zombies and vampires could have their own episodes as well.

So could a few directors or other authors – even though they’ve already covered the most obvious one in Horror’s Greatest season 1 with Stephen King. My point is simply that they could continue making episodes of this Shudder docuseries.

And I really hope they do!

Horror’s Greatest debuts with episode 1 on Shudder / AMC+ on August 27, 2024. Weekly episodes will be released with the final of this season coming out on September 24, 2024.

I write reviews and recaps on Heaven of Horror. And yes, it does happen that I find myself screaming, when watching a good horror movie. I love psychological horror, survival horror and kick-ass women. Also, I have a huge soft spot for a good horror-comedy. Oh yeah, and I absolutely HATE when animals are harmed in movies, so I will immediately think less of any movie, where animals are harmed for entertainment (even if the animals are just really good actors). Fortunately, horror doesn't use this nearly as much as comedy. And people assume horror lovers are the messed up ones. Go figure!
