MISSION CROSS is a new Netflix movie from South Korea (org. title: Keuroseu). The story could just as well play out in North America or Europe, as it’s very universal and deals with both crime and secrets.

For this movie, we’re getting crime, action, comedy, and a little bit in between, while we watch it all unfold. The runtime is just 100 minutes, which is short for a South Korean movie, but suits the storyline well.

Familiar yet fresh

Mission Cross tells the story of an agent-turned-househusband and his very active detective wife. They appear to be happy together even if their love is very much of the “tough love”-variety.

The husband ends up deeply involved in a mission to redeem himself, while his wife is clueless about his past and believes he’s having an affair. A solid setup for a story that seems familiar yet fresh.

It offers the kind of story we’ve seen in True Lies or Mr. & Mrs. Smith, though with its own unique story. In other words, this may not offer deep drama but it’s still an entertaining movie.

Actors in this movie include familiar faces from South Korean movies such as Train to Busan and The Wailing along with the Netflix movie Kill Bok-soon.

Lee Myung-hoon is the writer and director of this South Korean Netflix movie. It’s a very solid production right up there with anything from Hollywood. Not better nor worse.

This is the kind of movie where misunderstandings lead to plot development. It’s often funny, sometimes a bit cringey, and usually with a hint of predictability. But that’s the kind of movie this is, so I can live with that.

Also, the no-nonsense detective wife and her sweet husband (who used to be an agent) are funny together and the heart of the story.

Mission Cross (org. title: Keuroseu) is on Netflix from August 9, 2024.

Plot

In the ultimate test of marriage, an agent-turned-househusband gets tangled in a perilous mission with his detective wife, who’s clueless about his past.

I write reviews and recaps on Heaven of Horror. And yes, it does happen that I find myself screaming, when watching a good horror movie. I love psychological horror, survival horror and kick-ass women. Also, I have a huge soft spot for a good horror-comedy. Oh yeah, and I absolutely HATE when animals are harmed in movies, so I will immediately think less of any movie, where animals are harmed for entertainment (even if the animals are just really good actors). Fortunately, horror doesn't use this nearly as much as comedy. And people assume horror lovers are the messed up ones. Go figure!
