MS. MURDER is a new Tubi true crime docuseries. It premieres with 3 episodes, each focusing on a new female killer, but surely more are on the way if this is popular. And when isn’t true crime popular these days?

I have to say that this Tubi docuseries has a strong opening episode with a familiar woman. I mean, she already has a miniseries based on her actions. The NBC miniseries The Thing About Pam starring Renée Zellweger.

Each of the three episodes is around 1 hour in runtime, so you can binge-watch the episodes fairly quickly. Or you can make them last a while and let each story sink in. I would opt for the latter as there are some wild stories here.

A bit too flashy for my liking

The production is very much like the ID [Investigation Discovery] true crime shows that are being released on Max these days. I’m not a huge fan of that style as it becomes more entertainment-focused than a classic documentary.

It reminded me of the new HBO/ID production on Max titled Born Evil: The Serial Killer and the Savior. What all of these true crime docuseries have in common – whether released on Tubi or Max – is that the stories are interesting enough.

All of the added entertainment with a narrator who sounds like a news anchor, or the quick edits and non-linear storytelling, just doesn’t do it for me.

Ms. Murder – Review | Tubi True Crime Docuseries

The three killers in Ms. Murder

To help you get an idea of what to expect, we’ll give you a quick rundown of which female killer each episode focuses on. They may seem like ordinary women, but people have a nasty habit of dying around them.

Obviously, since they’re in this docuseries, it’s because the women kill people.

Pamela Hupp is the focus of Episode 1 (S01:E01)
When an alleged intruder is murdered in Pam Hupp’s home, it exposes a series of other mysterious deaths in Pam’s life.

Julene Simko is the killer in Episode 2 (S01:E02)
Julene Simko seemed to be building her dream life with her husband, Jeremy, until his brutal murder revealed a darker side to their marriage.

Stacey Castor is the perpetrator in Episode 3 (S01:E03)
When Stacey Castor’s second husband is found dead, a string of suspicious circumstances threaten to unravel her family and uncover dark truths.

The docuseries is directed by Victoria Duley and written by Benjamin Gregouli and Savannah Lucas. As mentioned earlier, I am not crazy about the style of this docuseries.

Fans of true crime – and watching how killers get caught – will enjoy this documentary series, I’m sure. Personally, I am always shocked to see how much of a mess police detectives make before getting the actual killer.

In episode 1 alone, they get the wrong guy at first and when they’re questioning him, they lie through their teeth. I know this is allowed, but it seems crazy to me. The same was shown in Born Evil and I was equally shocked.

Every time I watch police question (or just flat-out accuse) people in a murder investigation, I feel more convinced that so many innocent people are serving lengthy prison sentences. And, even worse, actual killers are running loose!

Another great example of this type of “questioning” was shown in American Nightmare on Netflix. Do check out that one as well!

MS. MURDER is out on Tubi on September 11, 2024.

Plot

Uncover three shocking stories of women whose seemingly ordinary lives are upended by questionable deaths.

I write reviews and recaps on Heaven of Horror. And yes, it does happen that I find myself screaming, when watching a good horror movie. I love psychological horror, survival horror and kick-ass women. Also, I have a huge soft spot for a good horror-comedy. Oh yeah, and I absolutely HATE when animals are harmed in movies, so I will immediately think less of any movie, where animals are harmed for entertainment (even if the animals are just really good actors). Fortunately, horror doesn't use this nearly as much as comedy. And people assume horror lovers are the messed up ones. Go figure!
