OUT COME THE WOLVES (2024) is a survival thriller from the director of BACKCOUNTRY. Once again, we’re getting solid entertainment – and Missy Peregrym. A win-win. Read our full Out Come the Wolves movie review here!

OUT COME THE WOLVES (2024) is a new survival thriller with a small cast and a tight story. It works really well, and even an animal lover like me can watch and enjoy it. As it’s often the case, animals aren’t the biggest enemy – humans are!

In this story, the wolves are hungry, and human hunters are in their territory. Not on purpose, but they’re still in the wrong place at the wrong time. Fortunately, you can forget about bad CGI and “evil” wolves, this story focuses on human mistakes.

Don’t mess with nature

In Out Come the Wolves, we meet the retired hunter Sophie. She’s now a vegan and no longer hunts. And yes, we do get to hear why, so you’re not left wondering about this.

Unfortunately for her boyfriend, Nolan, she cannot take him out to hunt. Not that he’s crazy about the idea of hunting, but he is a journalist and wants to write an article on hunting. Most likely inspired by Sophie’s decision to go vegan.

Nolan wants to see if he can kill something in order to have meat on the table. Or if he will chicken out. Fortunately for the couple, Sophie’s fellow hunter and childhood best friend, Kyle, has agreed to take Nolan out hunting.

From the moment the two men meet, tension is palpable. Jealousy seems to get the better of them both, but they do their best to move on from this initial feeling. They leave to go hunting and are ambushed by a vicious pack of territorial wolves.

Before long, Sophie finds herself forced to yet again pick up weapons and point them towards the animals, she no longer wishes to hurt. However, saving the people she loves is most important to her.

Out Come the Wolves (2024) – Review | Survival Thriller

Missy Peregrym for the win

As mentioned earlier, this movie comes from the director of Backcountry. A movie that was also about survival and being trapped in nature with a predator. Both movies offer solid entertainment and star Missy Peregrym (Reaper, FBI).

While the 2014 movie Backcountry featured a predatory black bear and Missy Peregrym, this one has a pack of wolves… and Missy Peregrym.

MORE HUNTING MOVIES

You’ll want to check out the 2019 movie Hunting Lands >

In Out Come the Wolves, she is clearly the best hunter of the three. Well, her boyfriend is completely new to hunting, but she is the better shot (or archer, as they use bow and arrow) of the two experienced hunters. And they both know it.

Even if she tries to make herself worse when they’re trying to teach Nolan how to shoot with a bow and arrow.

Along with Missy Peregrym as Sophie, we have Damon Runyan (Home Before Dark) as her boyfriend Nolan, and Joris Jarsky (God’s Country, The Little Things) as her childhood friend Kyle.

All three deliver strong and believable portrayals of their respective characters.

Watch Out Come the Wolves in theaters or on VOD

The director of Out Come the Wolves is Adam MacDonald, who also directed Backcountry (2019), Pyewacket (2017), and most episodes of the Shudder Original Series Slasher (2016-2023).

Also, Adam MacDonald is an actor, who you might still catch in front of the camera. Most recently, he was the voice of John Carver in Eli Roth’s 2023 horror movie Thanksgiving.

For his latest movie as a director, he also worked on the story alongside one of its stars, Joris Jarsky, and the screenwriter Enuka Okuma. While all three are credited for the story, Enuka Okuma is the only screenplay writer.

Supporting the filmmakers’ decade-long road to making this movie are both IFC Films and Shudder. These two often give a chance to genre productions (Shudder entirely focuses on this) and as fans, we should remember to support them right back!

To be fair, in Out Come the Wolves, the characters have immense respect for nature and hunt for food. Not that they need to, but they are respectful and decent about it. Well, for the most part.

Let’s leave it at that, so you can experience it for yourself.

Out Come the Wolves is In Theaters & On Digital from August 30, 2024.

Plot

At a remote cabin deep in the wilderness, a weekend of hunting turns to mayhem and a fight for survival when a pack of wolves attack a man, his female best friend, and her fiance.

I write reviews and recaps on Heaven of Horror. And yes, it does happen that I find myself screaming, when watching a good horror movie. I love psychological horror, survival horror and kick-ass women. Also, I have a huge soft spot for a good horror-comedy. Oh yeah, and I absolutely HATE when animals are harmed in movies, so I will immediately think less of any movie, where animals are harmed for entertainment (even if the animals are just really good actors). Fortunately, horror doesn't use this nearly as much as comedy. And people assume horror lovers are the messed up ones. Go figure!
