TAKEN TOGETHER: WHO KILLED LYRIC AND ELIZABETH? is a new Max Original three-part documentary series from Investigation Discovery. It’s a docuseries shot over several years.

This has resulted in many interviews with family members of the young girls, who went missing and were later found murdered. This true crime series covers several very brutal cases, so consider yourself warned.

A haunting case

The case of Lyric and Elizabeth is known as “the case that haunts the Midwest” and it’s not difficult to understand why. The true crime case at the heart of this docuseries is the 2012 double abduction of two cousins.

A double abduction in itself is a rarety which is covered in the opening part of the documentary. However, we’ll hear of several other examples as the hunt for the perpetrator begins. Many terribly brutal cases are covered.

Still, this three-part documentary series is first and foremost about the kidnapping and murder of 10-year-old Lyric Cook-Morrissey and 8-year-old Elizabeth Collins in Evansdale, Iowa.

Made over a seven-year period

Taken Together is a docuseries created over the course of seven years. Over this period, the documentary crew managed to get exclusive access, and insider interviews conducted by the first-time filmmaker Dylan Sires.

The docuseries offers an important focus on the family members of the victims. Also, the impact of this case is visible on their faces throughout. Understandably, they all seem to age far faster as they continue to have their hearts broken.

Later, we hear from another young girl who managed to escape her kidnapper in a different case. She has her own ghosts and is still struggling to this day with thoughts of what she could have done differently.

And could the cases be related?

This new docuseries comes from Dylan Sires, who gets his filmmaker debut with this three-part documentary series on Max. He was a former news photographer on the case and comes from the area, which clearly makes it more personal.

The three episodes all end on virtual cliffhangers leading to a new suspect and more victims. It’s the ideal setup to keep audiences engaged. However, it doesn’t mean it won’t still end with many unanswered questions.

One main suspect is dead, which alone makes for a terrible situation as he can’t be questioned. Many fall under suspicion over these three episodes and the police aren’t too forthcoming with information to the families.

Of course, some things cannot be revealed in an open investigation, but it’s hard to witness the desperation of the family members. Evansdale, Iowa, seems permanently scarred by the case which still hasn’t been officially closed.

Taken Together: Who Killed Lyric and Elizabeth? is on Max from August 8, 2024.

Plot

Known as “the case that haunts the Midwest,” the series dives into the 2012 double abduction of two cousins, 10-year-old Lyric Cook-Morrissey and 8-year-old Elizabeth Collins, in Evansdale, Iowa.

I write reviews and recaps on Heaven of Horror. And yes, it does happen that I find myself screaming, when watching a good horror movie. I love psychological horror, survival horror and kick-ass women. Also, I have a huge soft spot for a good horror-comedy. Oh yeah, and I absolutely HATE when animals are harmed in movies, so I will immediately think less of any movie, where animals are harmed for entertainment (even if the animals are just really good actors). Fortunately, horror doesn't use this nearly as much as comedy. And people assume horror lovers are the messed up ones. Go figure!
