The eight Thai horror stories

The new Netflix horror anthology is off to a solid start, which should be enough to keep you watching. We’ll do a quick rundown of the episodes below, to give you an idea of what to expect.

“Our Little Sister” is episode 1

We begin right after a car accident has tragically taken the life of Elle (Miusic-Praewa Suthamphong). This leaves her older sister Aye (Cherprang Areekul) struggling with PTSD.

Their mother (Dhanyabhorn Sondhikandha) then discovers a ritual to summon Elle’s spirit back into a doll. This doll comes with three rules (not unlike acquiring a Gremlin) and their home is a whole new kind of scary after this.

“Wedding Dress” is episode 2

The allure of a dream wedding dress hides a dark and sinister secret. Milk (Care-Panisara Rikulsurakan) is a skilled tailor at Nuch’s (Tonhom-Sakuntala Teinpairoj) bridal gown rental shop. When she discovers the perfect dress for herself, life takes a dramatic turn.

“Ode to My Family” is episode 3

Here we explore the lives of a police officer’s family as they move into a creepy old house. They live there while waiting for the result of their father’s (Not-Vorarit Fuangaromya) corruption case.

No one in the family wants to live there, and their unease only grows when they discover a sealed room with a warding charm.

“The Vow” is episode 4

Meet Nat (Gee-Sutthirak Subvijitra) and Dao (Smile-Parada Thitawachira), who are lovers with hidden secrets and an unwillingness to communicate openly. After making a vow to the Dark Mountain Mistress, they find that their promises bind them to a suffocating end.

“Spectral Glass” is episode 5

The story plays out in a school that may be a lively place by day but is a very eerie place at night. The new teacher Oil (Pat-Chayanit Chansangavej) is assigned solo nighttime duty, which leads her to unravel the chilling tale of the mysteriously vanished student, Nik.

“Girl Next Door” is episode 6

This is a story set in an apartment and you should expect some dark and scary moments. Bird (Nat Kitcharit) is a young man wanting freedom after leaving his white-collar job. He moves into a new apartment that comes with unsettling and ominous rules.

He is immediately drawn to the mysterious and beautiful girl living next door, Jane (Piglet-Charada Imraporn), who will change his life forever.

“Dear Granny” is episode 7

Get ready for a story that intertwines spirit-summoning rituals with the mysterious disappearance of a grandmother. The single mother Montha (Bee-Namthip Jongrachatawiboon) is compelled to do everything she can to bring her mother back.

Despite their strained relationship, Nulek (Sydney-Supitcha Sangkhachinda) believes her grandma is the only one who truly loves and cares for her. However, when Grandma finally returns, she’s no longer the same person.

“Viral Curse” is episode 8

Ending on a strong note, we get the story of struggling single mother Ple (Yarinda Bunnag). She’s the owner of a small laundry shop who experiences eerie occurrences. It all begins after she’s been checking out ghost stories on the Terror Tuesday radio show.

She quickly becomes convinced that both the lives of her 6-year-old daughter, Kaew (Irene-Maralyn Chatwattanasin), and herself are in grave danger from the ghost she saw on the show.

Plot

Inspired by the Thai horror radio show “Angkhan Khlumpong,” this series presents eight stories based on real-life experiences shared by listeners.

I write reviews and recaps on Heaven of Horror. And yes, it does happen that I find myself screaming, when watching a good horror movie. I love psychological horror, survival horror and kick-ass women. Also, I have a huge soft spot for a good horror-comedy. Oh yeah, and I absolutely HATE when animals are harmed in movies, so I will immediately think less of any movie, where animals are harmed for entertainment (even if the animals are just really good actors). Fortunately, horror doesn't use this nearly as much as comedy. And people assume horror lovers are the messed up ones. Go figure!
