THE INHERITANCE is a new horror movie with a survival plot. It felt like a hybrid of a few other movies but still entertained me more than expected. Read our full The Inheritance (2024) movie review here!

THE INHERITANCE is a horror movie with some wild death scenes. It’s a classic survival movie that feels eerily familiar yet has a fairly unique core plot and story. The characters are interesting, which makes for an entertaining watch.

If you like survival movies where people don’t just act like idiots, then this is definitely worth checking out. Also, with few exceptions, CGI isn’t used too much. Pro-tip: Remember to keep an eye on the dark corners of any room.

Working hard for that money…

In The Inheritance, we meet the four children of billionaire Charles Abernathy as they arrive to celebrate his 75th birthday. Well, the four children and one spouse – the wife of his youngest son is there as well.

While they believe they are there for a big birthday party, the truth is something else entirely. Charles Abernathy has invited them back home out of fear that tonight someone or something is going to kill him.

In other words, he has invited his children to keep him safe on this crucial evening before he turns 75. He has also sent home all the hired help, so only relatives remain at the house. Because he only trusts them, he says.

And yet, he also puts each of their inheritances on the line. To ensure they’ll help keep him alive, of course. If he dies before midnight, everything in his estate will go to a foundation instead of his children.

The Inheritance (2024) – Review | Horror | Alejandro Brugués

Think Abigail meets Humane

They are all locked up in the house together and must find a solution – like in Caitlin Cronenberg’s Humane – which they believe will be easy. Until they start dying and something sinister is clearly at play – just like in Abigail.

In fact, it took turns whether The Inheritance reminded me more of Humane or Abigail, though, in the end, it’s like neither of them. Which is good as it should be its own thing.

This new horror film stars Peyton List (School Spirits), David Walton (New Girl), Rachel Nichols, Austin Stowell (A Friend Of The Family), Briana Middleton (Sharper), and Bob Gunton (The Shawshank Redemption, Dead Silence).

Watch The Inheritance in Theaters & On Demand

The Inheritance is directed by Alejandro Brugues. He previously worked on the From Dusk Till Dawn: The Series, and horror movies such as Satanic Panic, and Pooka Lives!. In terms of the whole horror vibe, Alejandro Brugues has it down!

The screenplay comes from writers Chris LaMont (Dark, Deadly & Dreadful) and Joe Russo (Beyond the Dark). The two previously co-wrote the horror thriller Soul Mates (2023), which I have yet to watch.

Anyone who wants an entertaining and smart horror thriller should check out The Inheritance. No, it isn’t a brilliant new iconic horror movie, but it is one I enjoyed and am happy I spent an evening watching. That says quite a lot as well!

The Inheritance is out in Select Theaters & On Demand on July 12, 2024.

Plot

On the eve of his 75th birthday, billionaire Charles Abernathy invites his estranged children back home out of fear that tonight someone or something is going to kill him. He puts each of their inheritances on the line, to ensure they’ll help keep him alive.

I write reviews and recaps on Heaven of Horror. And yes, it does happen that I find myself screaming, when watching a good horror movie. I love psychological horror, survival horror and kick-ass women. Also, I have a huge soft spot for a good horror-comedy. Oh yeah, and I absolutely HATE when animals are harmed in movies, so I will immediately think less of any movie, where animals are harmed for entertainment (even if the animals are just really good actors). Fortunately, horror doesn't use this nearly as much as comedy. And people assume horror lovers are the messed up ones. Go figure!
