Always keeping up appearances

In The Perfect Couple, we’re following the young woman, Amelia Sacks (Eve Hewson), who is on the cusp of marrying into one of Nantucket’s wealthiest families. Amelia herself is just a normal girl from a very normal family.

As in not a wealthy family. Not by any means. But a loving family.

The matriarch of the wealthy family is Greer Garrison Winbury (Nicole Kidman). She married into this wealthy family and has built a career as a famous novelist. One who writes about love and romance – supposedly inspired by her own life.

Also, she knows that in this world, it’s all about keeping up appearances at all times. Obviously, this means she spares no expense on the high-society wedding.

Unfortunately, not all the money in the world can help them, when a dead body appears on the beach. Their beach, right in front of their gorgeous beach house where the rehearsal dinner took place the night before.

The Perfect Couple – Review | Netflix Murder Mystery Series

A brilliant cast

Before the end of episode 1, this has become a murder mystery. From that point on, the whodunnit story is at the forefront. Of course! Still, to help us understand the inner workings and alliances of these people, we also get many flashbacks.

Including many flashbacks to the night of the murder. Partially to give us clues, but also very much to lead us astray at every turn.

While Nicole Kidman and Liev Schreiber are the heads of the extremely wealthy Winbury family, the character we tend to follow the closest is the one played by Eve Hewson. I adored her in Behind Her Eyes so this suits me just fine.

Also, she plays Amelia Sacks, who is about to marry into the family, so she is more or less in our shoes when the murder happens. In the sense, that she also needs to discover all the secrets and weird alliances associated with the Winburys.

In other key roles, we see Billy Howle (The Serpent) as Benji, who is about to marry Amelia. And her best friend, and maid of honor, Merritt is portrayed by Meghann Fahy.

As someone who has already married into the family, we see Dakota Fanning (Ripley) as Abby, and Jack Reynor (Midsommar) as her husband, Thomas, the oldest Winbury son.

Watch The Perfect Couple on Netflix

The Perfect Couple has six 1-hour episodes and the entire miniseries is directed by Susanne Bier. She also directed the Netflix mega-hit Bird Box (2018) and directed Nicole Kidman in the HBO miniseries The Undoing, so this reunites them.

The series is based on the book by Elin Hilderbrand, who also serves as an executive producer on the series – as does director Susanne Bier.

As the writer and showrunner, we have Jenna Lamia. She previously wrote and produced My Best Friend’s Exorcism and she executive produces as creator of The Perfect Couple.

Also, there are some amazing guest stars in The Perfect Couple. Including Isabelle Adjani as a posh and liberated friend of the family. Plus the ever-amazing Adina Porter (The Changeling) as Greer’s publisher.

While I love the cast and performances, as well as the overall style, pace, and vibe, some elements feel a little too soapy. Part of it has to do with the setting in this very wealthy world, and there’s something else I can’t quite place.

However, I did enjoy watching it as I suspect most fans of murder mysteries will.

The Perfect Couple is out on Netflix worldwide on September 5, 2024.

Plot

Amelia is about to marry into one of the wealthiest families on Nantucket, until a shocking death derails the wedding — and turns everyone into a suspect.

I write reviews and recaps on Heaven of Horror. And yes, it does happen that I find myself screaming, when watching a good horror movie. I love psychological horror, survival horror and kick-ass women. Also, I have a huge soft spot for a good horror-comedy. Oh yeah, and I absolutely HATE when animals are harmed in movies, so I will immediately think less of any movie, where animals are harmed for entertainment (even if the animals are just really good actors). Fortunately, horror doesn't use this nearly as much as comedy. And people assume horror lovers are the messed up ones. Go figure!
