The Perfection is a new Netflix horror movie that starts out as a thriller but will definitely end in horror. But oh how sweet it is to watch this plot unfold.
It has twists and turns and will no doubt leave you both squirming in your seat and cheering. Sometimes both at the same time!
Allison Williams had her feature film debut in the brilliant Get Out by Jordan Peele and with her second feature, she continues in our beloved horror genre. When you watch her in The Perfection it’s obvious that she belongs in this genre. She is absolutely brilliant in both the tiniest ways and those big bold ones.
Read more about what to expect from The Perfection in our review below – or just hurry up and watch it on Netflix now!
Love and revenge in the vein of Black Swan
On the most basic level, The Perfection is a story about both love and revenge. Also, it covers both an honest and pure love as well as the sickest and most disturbing kind.
Also, yes, this story is very much in the LGBTQ genre. It could be compared to Black Swan in that sense. Actually, in more than just that particular sense, but the two movies are also very different. In fact, a better comparison would probably be the brilliant The Handmaiden by Park Chan-wook.
The style of this storytelling did also remind me of Jordan Peele’s Get Out. Mostly due to the fact that you just know something more is going on. You see certain things unfold but still feel absolutely sure that there’s so much more to this story. And you’d be right.
If you think you know the plot of The Perfection from the trailer, then you will be very surprised. The trailer only gives you a hint of the tone and plot while leaving all the best stuff for the actual movie. This is my favorite kind of trailer and the movie delivers so much more than you would expect.
Allison Williams as our new horror queen
There are many up and coming actors who are making a name for themselves in horror movies. This has always been the case really and these years it’s a trend that has come back big time. Just look at Jane Levy who started out with Evil Dead and Don’t Breathe and now stars in the new Netflix series What/If.
Allison Williams started out in the hugely popular HBO TV series Girls and then chose horror movies when she went on to doing feature films. And thank the Goddess for that. I absolutely adored her in Get Out (a role she should have gotten even more credit for) and now she’s the absolute star of The Perfection.
However, as soon as I’ve said that, I do also have to mention Logan Browning (Dear White People series on Netflix) who does co-star in The Perfection. The chemistry and energy between Allison Williams and Logan Browning absolutely make this movie.
Without them in the lead roles, this could have turned out as a cheesy music version of Showgirls. Fortunately, these two women know exactly how to give the performances this story requires.
The ending of The Perfection
The storyline of The Perfection is divided into four segments with the following titles: “Mission”, “Detour”, “Home”, and “Duet”.
Should you get annoyed with plot elements or feel that there are plot holes in The Perfection, then please just stay tuned. This story does go back and forth a few times to explain things. Whenever something happened that I felt was a bit off, it usually ended up having a very good explanation later on.
Also, the actual ending of The Perfection is absolutely glorious in the most twisted and delicious way.
However, if you have a problem with same-sex love in any way, shape or form, then I’m sure you’ll find plenty to gripe about. Because yes, The Perfection does have a very central LGBTQ storyline and characters. Then again, I think this will be a huge plus for many viewers.
Watch The Perfection on Netflix now!
The Perfection was directed by Richard Shepard who also co-wrote the script along with Eric C. Charmelo and Nicole Snyder. In the past, Richard Shepard has directed 12 episodes of Girls which is probably where he found his perfect leading lady. Also, he has directed an episode of Jordan Peele’s reboot of The Twilight Zone.
This is far from Richard Shepard’s first feature film. He also directed The Matador back in 2005 and Oxygen back in 1999. In other words, he’s been directing both film and TV for a long time. Hopefully, The Perfection marks the beginning of more horror thrillers to come.
To me, The Perfection is the perfect dark and twisted psychological thriller horror genre-bender. Do not miss this one!
The Perfection is out on Netflix worldwide from May 24, 2019.
