THE PLATFORM 2 on Netflix is a new horror, thriller sci-fi movie from Spain (org. title: El hoyo 2). We’re in the same dreadful place and it’s equally brutal. Read our spoiler-free The Platform 2 movie review here!

THE PLATFORM 2 is a new Netflix movie from Spain (El hoyo 2), and it takes place in the exact same location as the first movie. I loved the first movie and still cannot get over how brutal it was.

This one is still brutal (very!), but in a somewhat different way. I wasn’t a huge fan of the ending, which impacts the rating, but I absolutely recommend watching it.

We don’t do spoilers in our reviews, but I do recommend that you rewatch the first installment or check out a recap. You’ll find a YouTube recap at the bottom of this review, which we found helpful.

The dangers of ideology and religion

In The Platform 2, concepts we all know from ideology and religion once again prevail. For this second installment, they’re at the forefront from the very beginning.

There’s a mysterious leader, who imposes their set of beliefs and rules ruthlessly. “How?” you may ask if you’re familiar with this world?! Well, you’ll see. It’s certainly efficient.

Just like any other ideology or religion can be, when fear is used to keep everyone in line. Sure, it may sound like a very humanistic approach at first.

However, there are many rules, and not all of them make a lot of sense.

Even eating from the wrong plate on the platform has become a death sentence. Everyone is watching those below them to enforce the rules and ensure that they themselves don’t land in trouble.

It’s a method that we know from every country that has ever been under a dictator of any kind. Whether powered by religion or ideology, the result is the same.

Including how rules are defined and can be interpreted in various ways by those in charge.

The Platform 2 – Review | Netflix Horror

Waking up to a new reality

Just like in the first installment of The Platform (2019), we begin by following someone who has just arrived at “El hoyo”. Unlike in the first one, the new inmate isn’t paired with someone who knows the rules.

Instead, we follow Perempuan (Milena Smitand her equally new inmate, Zamiatín (Hovik Keuchkerian), as they both wake up to their new reality. People in the cells above them help explain the rules.

And yes, there are a lot of rules.

These rules are meant to ensure that everyone – or as many as possible – will get to eat. The main rule is that you only eat whatever food you named as your favorite food during your initial interview.

Get to know the inmates

In The Platform 2, we get to know the inmates better via these interviews. Not least whether they are there voluntarily or have been placed there.

And, of course, what they have named as their food of choice. Choose wisely, is all I could think! And I am still trying to figure out what my choice would be.

What would you choose as the one thing you would be eating day in and day out? A food that would satisfy but also (more importantly!) give you sustenance to survive the ordeal.

Along with Milena Smit (The Snow Girl) in the lead role, we also see Natalia Tena (Game of Thrones), and Óscar Jaenada (Xtreme) in key roles.

Watch The Platform 2 on Netflix

Very appropriately, The Platform 2 is directed by Galder Gaztela-Urrutia, who also directed the first installment. It’s the most popular Spanish film in Netflix history.

It ramped up a whopping 108.090.000 hours watched within its first 28 days of release. Obviously (or “obvio”, as a main character would say), a sequel was bound to be in extremely high demand.

The screenplay for this second installment comes from David Desola and Pedro Rivero, who also wrote the first movie, along with Egoitz Moreno and director Galder Gaztelu-Urrutia.

Having watched The Platform 2, I am really hoping for a third installment. Many questions are still unanswered (in fact, more have arisen from this one), so I hope we’ll get more. Preferably soon!

The Platform 2 is out on Netflix on October 4, 2024.

Recap of the first The Platform installment

Check out a quick, yet very in-depth, recap of the first movie right here:

I write reviews and recaps on Heaven of Horror. And yes, it does happen that I find myself screaming, when watching a good horror movie. I love psychological horror, survival horror and kick-ass women. Also, I have a huge soft spot for a good horror-comedy. Oh yeah, and I absolutely HATE when animals are harmed in movies, so I will immediately think less of any movie, where animals are harmed for entertainment (even if the animals are just really good actors). Fortunately, horror doesn't use this nearly as much as comedy. And people assume horror lovers are the messed up ones. Go figure!
