TWIN LIES on Tubi is a new thriller starring twins in trouble. It’s a mystery with a nice touch of campy comedy. I found myself enjoying it much more than I anticipated. Read our full Twin Lies movie review here!

TWIN LIES is a new Tubi thriller with twin characters and instead of having one actor in both roles, this one has twins. And it works really well. The thriller has a campy vibe that I wasn’t expecting but really enjoyed,

This is a MarVista production, which means it’s a classic TV movie production. Fortunately, a good story and passionate cast and crew will beat big budgets every time. This movie is a good example of that. Check it out on Tubi and have fun with it.

Twins in trouble

In Twin Lies, we quickly end up dealing with the somewhat stereotypical twins changing places. Pretending to be one another due to an initial (but intentional) mix-up. Very often, this kind of story falls flat quickly, but in Twin Lies, it’s done in a way that’s fun. And not too serious.

Before we get that far, we meet the main protagonist, Nina, who is a young barista trying to make a life for herself. It’s not going great as she has already managed to rack up quite a debt. It turns out her family has plenty of money, but she wants her own life.

Basically, she doesn’t want to adhere to their every wish and command, so instead she’s a real mess. But also seems pleased with her life, despite not knowing what she wants.

Enter her twin sister, Victoria, who also has a little secret of her own.

Nicole Peters and Lauren Peters

It turns out that Victoria isn’t the important businesswoman that her family thinks. Instead, she is an escort, who just got engaged and is looking to stop her career escorting. Before she’s done, there’s a gig she can’t fulfill, so she asks Nina to step in.

Nina agrees (especially when she hears the pay) and takes her twin sister’s place for the escorting gig. Immediately after this, all hell starts breaking loose as the FBI contacts Nina. Apparently, the mysterious client is dangerous and the FBI is looking to build a case against him.

As Nina and Victoria, we see real-life twins Nicole Peters and Lauren Peters. Both are brilliant in this movie. It’s like they were meant to make this movie. Sure, there are plenty of other twins in showbusiness, but for Twin Lies, I can’t imagine many others would work as well.

If they look familiar, it may be because theyed play the young versions of Blake Lively’s twin role in A Simple Favor (2018).

The director of Twin Lies is Karen Knox and I am convinced I can feel the female gaze throughout this Tubi thriller. It’s just a deeper and more well-rounded approach to telling a story featuring women. Overall, movies by Karen Knox are just very interesting.

The screenplay was written by Jen Bashian, who also wrote the 2023 Tubi thriller Below Deck Deceit. Along with Nicole Peters and Lauren Peters, we also see Alexander Eling, Theo Vandergraaf, and Demore Barnes in key roles. Plus Shaun Benson is perfect as the client.

As a thriller, this may be a bit predictable at times, and a tad too long, but it’s also entertaining and fun. Along with being intriguing and actually thrilling. If you’re looking for a fun thriller with a different vibe, then check this out on Tubi.

TWIN LIES is out on Tubi from July 20, 2024.

Plot

When a young barista takes her twin sister’s place for an escorting gig, all hell breaks loose when their mysterious client turns dangerous.

I write reviews and recaps on Heaven of Horror. And yes, it does happen that I find myself screaming, when watching a good horror movie. I love psychological horror, survival horror and kick-ass women. Also, I have a huge soft spot for a good horror-comedy. Oh yeah, and I absolutely HATE when animals are harmed in movies, so I will immediately think less of any movie, where animals are harmed for entertainment (even if the animals are just really good actors). Fortunately, horror doesn't use this nearly as much as comedy. And people assume horror lovers are the messed up ones. Go figure!
