TYLER PERRY’S DIVORCE IN THE BLACK is a new Prime Video movie from Tyler Perry Studio. Unlike the previous movies, this one isn’t on Netflix but I’m sure it’ll still be a hit. Not because it’s good, but because he pulls in the numbers.

MORE FROM TYLER PERRY

His previous movie was the Netflix movie Mea Culpa starring Kelly Rowland >

This one is over 2 hours long and full of drama, but the kind that you’d expect from a Lifetime movie or a soap opera. Not a feature film on Prime Video (or Netflix). And yet, the opening scene with a funeral absolutely mesmerized me. Not all in good ways, but it still worked.

So much drama – and yes, that is the title!

In Tyler Perry’s Divorce in the Black, we meet Ava (Meagan Good), a young bank professional, who has married a man named Dallas for reasons I will never understand. No matter what the story tells me, it makes no sense that this woman would marry that man.

Also, yes, Tyler Perry’s Divorce in the Black is the full and actual title of this movie. It’s listed as such on both IMDb and Prime Video, where it’s released.

Anyway, Ava is devastated when her husband Dallas walks out on her and she wants to keep fighting for their marriage. Why? I have no idea. Even Ava’s parents support that she gets a divorce and her father is a preacher.

In any case, she discovers things about Dallas that change her mind. For everyone else watching this movie, they will know within the first few minutes that he is not a keeper.

However, before it’s all completely over, we need to go through a lot of drama with the N-word and B-word used extensively. Violence and brutality come into play which is why it’s a thriller as well as a drama.

And also why we’re covering it, though I never expected it to be this much drama!

Tyler Perry's Divorce in the Black (2024) – Review | Prime Video Drama-Thriller

Good in a bad movie

Meagan Good plays the central character of Ava in Tyler Perry’s Divorce in the Black but she can’t save this. I wasn’t sure whether to call this a bad movie, but it did make for a good little header in this review.

The problem with this movie is that it has the cast and budget to do something good. Instead, this is a TV movie that feels like something you’d see on Lifetime or Tubi. Only they would’ve made it for a much smaller budget.

And, honestly, Chris Stokes makes movies on Tubi that are at least as good as this Tyler Perry production. Both focus on having a predominantly black cast and I am all for that. Just make the movie good.

As someone in the LGBTQ+ community, I expect the same of movies made for me. I feel cheated when someone doesn’t deliver and I don’t feel Tyler Perry delivers on the quality that the budget, cast, and platform promise.

Despite having Meagan Good (The Unborn, Day Shift) as its star.

As “revealed” by the title of Tyler Perry’s Divorce in the Black, this is a Tyler Perry movie. He is the writer, director, and producer. Star Meagan Good is also a producer, which always makes me happy to see.

I would probably give this 1½ out of 5 if we did half-ratings. We don’t and with the budget and cast at his fingertips yet underutilized, I see no reason to pull this latest Tyler Perry project up to a 2 out of 5 rating.

However, Ursula O. Robinson as Linda was so amazing in both fabulous and terrifying ways during the opening scene (which is a funeral) that I have to give this movie a higher rating due to her. Every scene with Ursula O. Robinson is enough reason to watch this. One tough mom!

Tyler Perry’s Divorce in the Black is out on Prime Video from July 11, 2024.

I write reviews and recaps on Heaven of Horror. And yes, it does happen that I find myself screaming, when watching a good horror movie. I love psychological horror, survival horror and kick-ass women. Also, I have a huge soft spot for a good horror-comedy. Oh yeah, and I absolutely HATE when animals are harmed in movies, so I will immediately think less of any movie, where animals are harmed for entertainment (even if the animals are just really good actors). Fortunately, horror doesn't use this nearly as much as comedy. And people assume horror lovers are the messed up ones. Go figure!
