UNTOLD: THE MURDER OF AIR MCNAIR is a new Netflix documentary. This UNTOLD series is about crime in the sports world, so it’s essentially a sports series and true crime hybrid.

This is episode 1 of season 4, so you have plenty you can dig into if the style is to your liking. This case is about the shocking 2009 murder of Steve McNair.

The runtime of just 58 minutes covers both his meteoric rise to fame as an NFL MVP quarterback and the investigation of his murder. Overall, it’s a bit too superficial for my liking.

From the 1999 rise to the 2009 murder

On July 4, 2009, the former NFL MVP quarterback Steve “Air” McNair was found murdered from multiple gunshot wounds. His body is discovered next to the 20-year-old Sahel “Jenny” Kazemi. They were found dead in a downtown Nashville apartment.

If you don’t know the story, a quick Google search will answer basic “whodunnit”-questions, but I recommend watching this first. And if you do know the story, it’ll be interesting to see if you remember it as it’s depicted here.

While hearing from friends of McNair, we also get interviews with police detectives who worked the case. Also, we see police footage of suspects and witnesses being interviewed.

This is intertwined with the story of McNair’s rise to stardom across 13 seasons in the NFL. Most notably, his team’s stunning run to the 2000 Super Bowl after relocating to Nashville to become the Tennessee Titans.

After all, this is a sports series about crime in the sports world, so it makes sense.

While I did enjoy getting to know the career of Steve “Air” McNair as well as getting familiar with the 20-year-old Sahel “Jenny” Kazemi, the documentary left me with many questions.

Right after concluding who was responsible for the murder of Air McNair, a few new facts are shared. These facts are clearly meant to make us wonder if the case was solved correctly.

However, instead of going much further into this, the true crime documentary just stops. It felt like episode 1 of a docuseries instead of a complete story. To me, anyway.

In terms of the sports coverage, it worked much better. Especially highlighting how the whole “The Tennessee Titans almost won the Superbowl” element was included in the 2000 Tom Hanks hit movie Cast Away.

I understand why this was included to highlight the impact McNair had.

UNTOLD: The Murder of Air McNair is on Netflix from August 20, 2024.

Plot

This documentary tracks the rise of legendary NFL quarterback Steve McNair and the perplexing details surrounding his shocking murder in 2009.

I write reviews and recaps on Heaven of Horror. And yes, it does happen that I find myself screaming, when watching a good horror movie. I love psychological horror, survival horror and kick-ass women. Also, I have a huge soft spot for a good horror-comedy. Oh yeah, and I absolutely HATE when animals are harmed in movies, so I will immediately think less of any movie, where animals are harmed for entertainment (even if the animals are just really good actors). Fortunately, horror doesn't use this nearly as much as comedy. And people assume horror lovers are the messed up ones. Go figure!
