WE ARE ZOMBIES on Screambox is a new Zombie Horror-Comedy from RKSS. It’s funny and entertaining, which is all I’d expect or even want from this kind of niche movie. Also, lots of delicious practical effects.  Read our full We Are Zombies movie review here!

WE ARE ZOMBIES is a new Screambox Original. As the title indicates, this is a zombie movie. Also, it’s a horror comedy and full of practical effects, so it should speak to many genre fans. Actually, it’s from the Turbo Kid filmmakers, which should also excite fans of that style.

It’s only 80 minutes long, which is another good sign. I can’t claim that this is the kind of movie I’ll be watching over and over again. Unlike the zombie horror comedy Shaun of the Dead. However, I would definitely recommend it to all genre fans.

Not zombies, but “living-impaired”

This new Screambox Original has been labeled a “Fresh Take on the Undead” and that’s definitely true. We’re in a world where the dead are back, and the living have no idea what to do with them. In many ways, this is the horror-comedy take on the same situation as the horror-drama Handling the Undead.

Also, in a politically correct fashion, the zombies are not called “zombies” but rather “living-impaired”. And they’re not aggressive or out to eat our brains. Instead, they’re just very slow and laid back. Confused for the most part, while others are just very pale and dark around the eyes, but still seem very “normal” otherwise.

We Are Zombies (2023) – Review | Zombie Horror-Comedy

Non-Cannibal Zombies

I know I just said they’re called “living-impaired” in this movie, but to help you understand what kind of zombies, we’re dealing with, you could also describe them as non-cannibal zombies. While these creatures are not dangerous to living humans, the same cannot be said the other way around.

The story plays out in a city infested with the living-impaired, but the main plot is something else. It’s about three slackers, who try to hustle their way through life and end up in trouble. In the pursuit of making a quick buck, they fight both small-time crooks and an evil megacorporation who kidnapped their grandma.

The cast may be largely unknown to most viewers, but they’ve already been in interesting productions. We have Alexandre Nachi (1991), Derek Johns (The Boys), Megan Peta Hill (Riverdale), Vincent Leclerc (The Revenant), Benz Antoine (Death Race), and Carlo Mestroni (Assassin’s Creed II).

Watch We Are Zombies on Screambox now!

As mentioned earlier, We Are Zombies comes from the filmmakers known as RKSS (Turbo Kid, Summer of ’84). The Canadian filmmaking collective is composed of François Simard, Anouk Whissell, and Yoann-Karl Whissell.

They wrote and directed this movie based on the comic book series The Zombies That Ate the World.

We Are Zombies quickly became a film festival favorite and it’s easy to understand why. It screened at  Fantasia International Film Festival, Sitges Film Festival, and Fantastic Fest. Many have compared it to Shaun of the Dead, Zombieland, and Warm Bodies. And I would have to agree with all three.

The SCREAMBOX Original We Are Zombies is streaming everywhere now and you should absolutely check it out. I may not have any expectations that I’ll watch it again. However, I wouldn’t mind watching it again, I just don’t plan on it.

We Are Zombies is on Screambox from August 13, 2024.

Plot

In a city infested with the living-impaired — also known as non-cannibal zombies — three slackers after easy money must fight small-time crooks and an evil megacorporation to save their kidnapped grandma.

I write reviews and recaps on Heaven of Horror. And yes, it does happen that I find myself screaming, when watching a good horror movie. I love psychological horror, survival horror and kick-ass women. Also, I have a huge soft spot for a good horror-comedy. Oh yeah, and I absolutely HATE when animals are harmed in movies, so I will immediately think less of any movie, where animals are harmed for entertainment (even if the animals are just really good actors). Fortunately, horror doesn't use this nearly as much as comedy. And people assume horror lovers are the messed up ones. Go figure!
